Integrated by Design
Fire and life safety systems are most effective when they operate as part of a larger, connected ecosystem. TRL specializes in integrating fire alarm systems with security, access control, communications and mass notification platforms, improving visibility, coordination, and response across your facility.
These integrations reduce silos, streamline operations and enhance safety without adding unnecessary complexity.
Fire Life Safety for the Future: EST4
Modern facilities require modern life safety platforms. The EST4 networked fire life safety system builds on the proven foundation of EST3 while delivering enhanced performance, security and scalability.
Key advantages of migrating to EST4 include:
Remote system access with real-time reporting and email/SMS notifications
Reduced cabling requirements—supporting panel networking, audio, and telephone data over a single copper pair or fiber
Event history capacity of up to 20,000 events for service and investigation
Large, full-color touchscreen displays for intuitive system access
Advanced proxy firewall technology meeting current encryption standards
EST4 delivers a future-ready platform designed to meet evolving code requirements, cybersecurity expectations, and operational demands.
Ready to Upgrade?
Cost-effective migration options and enhanced network security make transitioning to EST4 both practical and affordable. TRL Systems can help you evaluate your current system and develop a migration plan that aligns with your facility and budget. Contact us.
Our Project Approval Turn-Around Times are the Best in the Industry!
Fast approvals matter, especially in highly regulated environments. TRL has built strong working relationships with state and local Fire Marshals and the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD), allowing projects to move efficiently from design through approval.
Whether your facility requires a straightforward fire alarm or a complex, networked life safety system, our teams deliver site-specific solutions engineered for compliance, performance and long-term reliability.
FAQs
Fire Alarm System Upgrades
-
Upgrades are typically required when systems become obsolete, fail catastrophically, or during major renovations or tenant improvements. Full system replacements must meet current codes and standards, including coverage of previously unprotected areas.
-
Yes. Partial upgrades are allowed if the new components are compatible and meet current code requirements.
-
No prior submittal is needed for emergency repairs, but documentation must be submitted afterward for reacceptance testing.
-
Detailed plans, battery and voltage drop calculations, manufacturer data sheets, and California State Fire Marshal listings.
-
A licensed electrical or fire protection engineer, or a C-10 contractor, depending on the scope.
Fire Tenant Improvement (TI) – Fire Alarm
-
Yes, especially if the TI increases the building area beyond thresholds (e.g., 1,500 sq ft for unsprinklered buildings). New tenants in buildings without existing systems may be required to install fire alarms.
-
Minor changes (e.g., up to 4 initiating devices or 10 notification appliances) may not require full plan review. New control panels or significant changes always require full plan review.
-
Pre-wire (rough) and final inspections are mandatory. All components must be tested in the presence of the Fire Code Official.
-
Buildings must have visible address numbers, exit signs, and fire alarm system diagrams in common areas.
